STEAMBOAT SPRINGS SCHOOL DISTRICT RE-2
Destruction of Special Education Records

In accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), 34 CFR §300.624, school districts are required to notify parents or eligible students when information in a student's special education records is no longer needed to provide educational services.

This notice serves as public notification to parents or eligible students (students who are 18 years of age or older, unless legal guardianship or conservatorship has been established) of the Steamboat Springs School District RE-2’s intent to destroy special education records that are no longer educationally relevant.

Records scheduled for destruction include:

• Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)

• Evaluation Reports and Test Protocols

• Review of Existing Data Summaries

• All other personally identifiable information contained in the Special Education file

The district will retain only archival information such as the student’s name, grades, attendance records, classes attended, grade level completed, and number of years enrolled, in accordance with federal regulations.

Records Scheduled for Destruction:

• Students who graduated, withdrew, or exited special education services on or before June 4, 2020

• Destruction date: August 1, 2025

Important Information:

• Identification is required to obtain any files prior to destruction.

• If the student is under the legal guardianship of a parent/guardian after age 18, proof of guardianship must be presented before records will be released.

Parents or eligible students may request a copy of these records prior to their destruction.

Deadline to request records: August 1, 2025

These records may be needed in the future for purposes such as applying for Social Security benefits, vocational rehabilitation services, or post-secondary accommodations.
