Parent and Caregiver’s Resources to Navigating the Digital World

Parenting in the age of social media is challenging, but at SSSD we are working to educate and support our students and their parents. We believe that building awareness and having important conversations with young people is essential to raising digitally responsible and resilient kids. To that end, we have compiled valuable resources for parents and caregivers to help them navigate the digital world with their children. We welcome questions or concerns and are committed to working together to create safety nets for our youth. Please contact Shelby DeWolfe, Behavioral Health and Restorative Practices Manager (sdewolfe@ssk12.org) with any questions.

  • This Parent’s Guide to Raising Digitally Responsible Youth will equip you with the knowledge you need to stay in the loop about the most popular applications and trends. Correspondingly, this guide will give you a better understanding of your child or teen’s internet usage so you can relate to the digital world they live in.  The guide was designed to help introduce Parents and Caregivers to leading social media platforms, video games, and relevant trends that are being used or have the potential to be used by children. This is a user-friendly resource that will help you engage with your youth in conversations around social media and how to help prepare them for a safe digital journey.

  • Common Sense Media - If you are unsure if your child is emotionally mature enough for a movie, book, video game, TV show, social media platform, Common Sense Media offers the largest, most trusted library of independent age-based ratings and reviews.

  • Safer Schools Together provides parents and caregivers with other educational resources such as:

The above resources can help you prepare for conversations with your students about social media, establish healthy boundaries, and create family expectations and norms around the use of social media. They can also help you understand what to do if your students are exposed to something that requires a trusted adult's involvement.

We are committed to ongoing education in the schools on this topic and how it relates to our students' experiences, mental health, and positive development.  We will continue to work with our community partners and join forces with our parents and caregivers to establish protective factors for our students. It takes all of us to influence, support, educate, and create safety nets for the young people in our community.
